I bought the K10 budget membrane faux mechanical keyboard because my main PC keyboard stop working after 7 years, and I needed a replacement so I could continue working from home while waiting for the new replacement keyboard to arrive next week.
The first thing I noticed when I picked up the Amazon package at my front door was how heavy it was. When I opened the packaging, I was impressed with its mechanical keyboard look, and it appeared to be a quality keyboard at a budget price of $20. Of course, as soon as I placed the K10 on my desk, I began testing the keypress feedback, noise, and typing experience. The key travel was a little stiff, but it was still adequate for the price. The amount of key typing noise was surprisingly low.
Plugging in the braided USB cable of the K10 reveals the first con: it’s too short at 67″ long; another 6 to 12 inches would be preferable. The RGB lights on the board illuminated, and my Windows 10 Pro PC had no problems with the new K10. The next thing I noticed, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, is that the keys are smaller than on a standard full-sized keyboard.
I am a touch typist capable of 60+wpm, so the keypad size felt a little off to me. Touch typing resulted in some missed direct keypad hits more on the side of the key, but adjusting was simple after nearly 40 years of using and owning many computers and their keyboards. Another thing I noticed right after startup was a distinct odor coming from the board, which seemed to be a combination of electrical and plastic overheating (note, I had the RGB lights off). It faded after about 20 minutes, and I haven’t noticed it since. That first session with the K10 required 5+ hours of nonstop typing.
What does a touch typist think of the K10’s key typing?
• Tired fingers, my fingers were tired after 1 hour and sore after 2 hours. The issue is that I type slightly harder than the average typist, who may have learned to type on a mushy membrane keyboard. I learned on IBM electric computers, which had a slightly heavier key press.
The keystroke travel on the floating keys of the K10 is higher or longer than on most keyboards, at 3.6mm, so I have to push further down to bottom out the key travel, and if I am typing hard and fast, my fingers are sore. I tested where the action point appeared to be in the key travel, and it’s either halfway or slightly higher. So typing with a lighter keystroke and avoiding key bottoming out should result in less soreness. A lighter touch is possible, and the keys feel good as you type, so you shouldn’t get sore fingers. I wish the stroke was a little softer or less stiff.
•Noise, a remark on YouTube reviewers. Any YT review that does a keyboard review on a wooden desk or a hard desk surface without a large mouse pad that cushions and accommodates both the keyboard and mouse is only noise testing the keyboard resonating with the hard desk, which is likely 2 or 3x louder than typing on a desk size mouse pad. The K10’s typing noise was very low while sitting on a 32″x12″x 2-3mm thick pad.
•No movement, the K10 does not slide or move at all on my full-size keyboard/mouse pad, the K10’s weight and three rubber grip pads on the front bottom of the chassis, as well as the two pull-out feet, securely hold the board with no movement.
•On the space bar, there was very slight key wobble.
•I’m not a fan of RGB lights, but if there was an RGB option that lit only the key letter or number, that would be ideal. It is, however, not an option.
